Borealis, the Austrian chemicals producer in which the Abu Dhabi Government owns a majority stake, returned to profit in the second quarter after one of the toughest periods in its history. Dubai Aluminium Co (Dubal) said on Sunday that sales rose 5 per cent in the second quarter as demand remained strong in Asia and the Middle East. Sales volumes for the second quarter were 275,055 metric tonnes, compared to 261,972 metric tonnes in the same period last year, state-owned Dubal said. The Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ADCCI) saw 6,236 new companies registering with it in the first half of this year, its top official told Emirates Business yesterday. UAE steel imports decline 75% on lower demand

Monthly steel imports to the UAE dropped by almost 75 per cent last month compared to July and August 2008, industry executives said, citing the lower demand and increased local production. While 800,000 tonnes of steel was imported into the UAE during July and August last year, only about 200,000 tonnes is being imported currently.
