Air Arabia in talks to buy about 40 new aircraft

Air Arabia, the Sharjah-based low-cost carrier, is finalising a deal to purchase as many as 40 new aircraft in the next few weeks, its chief executive said."We are planning to buy between 34 to 40 planes, and this could be decided in the next few weeks," CEO Adel Ali said on Sunday. Etihad Airways, the UAE's national carrier, will launch services to Brisbane, its second destination in Australia. Etihad is to increase its flying programme from Australia following the success of its Sydney service, the carrier said. Abu Dhabi International Airport handled a total of 707,671 passengers in August 2007, a 32 per cent rise over the 536,201 passengers seen in August 2006. The number of aircraft movements increased 10% during the same period, rising from 6,156 in August 2006 to 6,785. The Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) yesterday staged a full-scale plane crash drill to test the emergency response plans. Royal Jet has launched a cost-effective Learjet service in a move to broaden private charter appeal within the region. Etihad Airways has signed a contract with New York-based CIT Aerospace for the lease of two new Airbus A330-200 aircraft. Etihad Airways yesterday signed the terms of a USD180 million agreement for a Sale and Leaseback facility that will be used to finance the airline's acquisition of two Airbus A330-200 aircraft.
