Heavy rains across country, cause accidents

Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm lashed Al Ain and its surrounding areas on Tuesday night, bringing the temperature down to 12 degree Celsius. Prior to the downpour, strong winds swept through Al Ain. It showers, which began around half an hour after midnight on Tuesday, continued till noon on Wednesday. The UAE is among 55 countries that rank high in the human development index, according to the Human Development Report 2003 released by the UNDP yesterday. The index rated 175 countries in high, medium and low development categories depending on their achievements in terms of life expectancy, educational attainment and adjusted real income. Areas of the northern and eastern Emirates suffered a mild earthquake on 12 March lasting about four seconds measuring 2 to 3 on the Richter scale, according to official sources at Fujairah airport.
