More than 300,000 people will be added to the UAE population this year to record the highest growth of 6.3 per cent in five years and Dubai would likely emerge as the fastest growing emirate, official figures show.

The ratio of foreign to local population in the UAE has remained high in the past years and is expected to widen in the future because of a rapid growth in expatriates, official figures showed yesterday.
The country's total population was estimated at around 4.48 million at the end of 2007 and is projected to grow 6.12 per cent to nearly 4.76 million at the end of 2008 and by 6.31 per cent to 5.06 million at the end of 2009, showed the figures by the Ministry of Economy.

Field survey in the rural and suburban areas has begun, it was announced yesterday by Economy Minister, Sultan bin Saeed Al-Mansouri.

By 2030 Abu Dhabi's gross population is projected to surge to 3.1 million from the current baseline figure of 930,000 in 2007, while annual tourist visits and residential units are set to rise to 7.9 million and 686,000 from 1.8 million and 180,000 respectively.

 Dubai population makes big surge

Some 292,000 more people have become Dubai residents in just one year as the emirate's population increased to 1.422 million in 2006 from 1.130 million in 2005. This means that 24,333 people were added to Dubai's population every month, 800 daily and around 33 every hour during 2006. The figure does not include tourists.

The UAE's explosive population growth has benefited many sectors of the economy. And the medical equipment industry is no exception. According to a government report, Dubai's population alone is expected to surge to 1.6 million by 2010 if current growth rates are maintained.

The census population, houses and establishments in Dubai showed that the number of UAE nationals aged 10 years and above was 106,867, a total of 77.7 per cent of the emirate's total national residents. Among the national residents of Dubai, 49.8 per cent are male, while 50.2 per cent are female. Arif Obaid Al Muhairi, Director of the Census Centre at the Dubai Municipality sad that the majority of national residents hold a secondary school degree, making up 31.5 per cent of national residents.

Dubai's population hit 1,241,000 (one million two hundred forty one thousand) as on 30 June 2006. Of the total population, 73 per cent or 911,000 are male and 27 per cent or 330,000 are female.

 Nationwide programme raises census awareness

Abu Dhabi: An education programme aimed at raising consciousness about the census among students was launched yesterday by the Ministry of Education.
