The ratio of foreign to local population in the UAE has remained high in the past years and is expected to widen in the future because of a rapid growth in expatriates, official figures showed yesterday.
The country's total population was estimated at around 4.48 million at the end of 2007 and is projected to grow 6.12 per cent to nearly 4.76 million at the end of 2008 and by 6.31 per cent to 5.06 million at the end of 2009, showed the figures by the Ministry of Economy.

Field survey in the rural and suburban areas has begun, it was announced yesterday by Economy Minister, Sultan bin Saeed Al-Mansouri.

Some 292,000 more people have become Dubai residents in just one year as the emirate's population increased to 1.422 million in 2006 from 1.130 million in 2005. The census population, houses and establishments in Dubai showed that the number of UAE nationals aged 10 years and above was 106,867, a total of 77.7 per cent of the emirate's total national residents. Among the national residents of Dubai, 49.8 per cent are male, while 50.2 per cent are female. Arif Obaid Al Muhairi, Director of the Census Centre at the Dubai Municipality sad that the majority of national residents hold a secondary school degree, making up 31.5 per cent of national residents.
