SPORT & LEISURE - FIFA WORLD YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP 2003
UAE leaves strong mark on world soccer map, on and off the field posted on 21/12/2003
Great and many are the gains for the UAE in the FIFA Under 20 World Youth Cup which the country hosted over the past 23 days. The biggest and most important was the promotion for the country as it put UAE in the lime light of the football world. The good facilities provided to all the participants whether players, officials, referees or media personnel was unprecedented and has left a good impression ensuring that all visitors will leave the country with sweet memories.
On the field, the UAE team of promising youngsters achievements was beyond their dreams despite their disappointing start of their campaign when they lost the opener 4-1 against Slovakia. They finished as the first team in Asia and seventh on the world level. The young players have gained valuable experience playing against superior teams, physically and tactically, and were able to prove their capabilities and earned the respect of the whole world.
The tournament unearthed a number of promising youngsters. Ismail Matar, who was selected as the tournament's " Best Player" is one of those. Ali Al Waheebi, the right wing back, and Ismail Rabie, the custodian, are also two of the local players who fared exceptionally well in the tournament. The team have created a bond with the local football fans who came out in numbers to support the young players, which makes a pleasant change as the stadiums used to be empty in the past.
The attendance, which was one of the areas that had worried the organisers prior to the event, proved to be a factor of success. The stadiums were always full and the final match was attended by over 55,000 spectators.
The Mondial succeeded in ending the spectators embargo of the matches and everyone is optimistic that a new relationship between the fans and the game will flourish which will benefit the domestic game. Off the field, the success was great. It is more evident in the comment of Jack Warner, the Vice President of FIFA, who hoped that the UAE will apply to FIFA to host more international events.
Earning the confidence of FIFA is vital for the future and will surely turn useful when the UAE does apply for a major tournament. The good news is that General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Minister of Defence, has instructed the authorities of Dubai to build an international sports city in the near future. It is another gain of the FIFA Under 20 World Cup. (The Gulf News)

UAE battle hard for victory posted on 02/12/2003
Hosts UAE revived their hopes of reaching the second round of the FIFA World Youth Championships with a hard-earned 2-1 victory over Panama in a Group A match at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium yesterday. The UAE collected their first three points while their opponents are yet to open their account.
The UAE started the match pressing forward for a goal and their efforts were soon rewarded when Belgian referee awarded them a penalty 15 minutes into the game following a foul by Armando Gun against Ali Al Waheebi inside the penalty box. Shihab Abdullah converted correctly from the spot.
The home defenders failed to clear a corner kick and advancing defender Armando Gun was sent clear with only Ismail Rabie, the UAE custodian to beat, which he did correctly. Later Abdullah Mallullah watched in disbelief as he saw his fierce shot, two minutes into injury time, rebound from the upright following a fast counter attacking move with Ismail Matar being the provider.
In the second half, the home players attacked more fiercely capitalising on the reduction in numbers of their rivals. But lack of concentration deprived them from an early goal as Shihab, Salih Hamad and Ridha Abdul Hadi all missed good chances. But the UAE were rewarded for their determination when Salih Hamad scored the match winner in the 34th minute, with a diving header.

Make-or-mar match for UAE posted on 01/12/2003
Hosts UAE face Panama in a crucial Group A world youth cup encounter at the Mohammed bin Zayed Stadium tonight. Kickoff is at 8:30 pm. It is a match that no team can afford to lose; as a loss would mean a reduction in their hopes of reaching the second round since both teams have lost their respective openers to Slovakia and Burkina Faso respectively.
Both teams have prepared seriously for tonight's game. Their players trained the next day after their opening game and realise what another loss could mean to their youth world cup hopes. They are thus determined not to lose. (The Gulf News)
