Dubai shops for flowers worth millions from Brazil and other South American countries, with the opening of direct flights to Rio de Janeiro. DFC to target flower exports from Thailand

The Dubai Flower Centre (DFC) is planning to improve its business links with Thailand, according to its marketing director Ebrahim Ahli. Dubai Flower Centre (DFC), the only state-of-the-art transshipment facility for perishable goods in the region, is well poised to tap the Indian flower export market which is expected to exceed Dh3.67 billion (US$1 billion) by 2010. Dubai sees 15% more air cargo this year

Dubai International Airport is expected to handle 1.5 million tonnes of cargo this year, an increase of 15 per cent over the volume of 2005. Flower and plant trade reaches full bloom in Dubai

Dubai's emergence as a hub for commerce and tourism has sprouted a sizable trade in flowers and plants. Although reliable figures about market size are not available, people associated with the industry see a huge potential for growth. The US$70-million (Dh257 million) Dubai Flower Centre (DFC), a strategically located transshipment facility for perishable goods in the region, has now become fully operational, and has handled total volume of 3,475 tonnes of goods in the first ten days of operation.
