TAQA and THEOLIA: Strategic partnership in Morocco Posted on 16/06/2008
The Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA), a global energy company, and THEOLIA, a leader in the production of electricity from wind energy, signed on June 10th 2008 a strategic partnership agreement in the renewable energy sector in Morocco.
This agreement aims to create a consortium of these two prequalified companies to respond jointly to the international invitation to tender for the construction and operation of a 300 MW wind farm located in Tarfaya, Morocco.

Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, has issued Emiri Decree no. 20 of 2008, amending Emiri Decree no. 1 of 1995 and its amendments, dealing with the establishment of Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (SEWA).

UAE per capita water consumption 550 litres per day: survey Posted on 14/06/2008
Residents of the United Arab Emirates are among the highest per capita water users in the world, consuming an average of 550 litres per day, reported the Gulf News.
Water, said the paper, ranked as the issue of least concern in a survey conducted by the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) to measure the level of environmental awareness and behaviour among the public in Abu Dhabi.

Taqa plans US$5bn acquisitions this year Posted on 12/06/2008
Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa) plans to make four major acquisitions worth US$5 billion (Dh18.35bn) in North Africa, Saudi Arabia, the US and Europe by the end of the year.
Talks on two of the deals are well advanced and should be concluded soon, said CEO Peter Barker-Homek. The other two are expected to be finalised in the second half of the year.

Dewa bonds at 125bps above Eibor Posted on 31/05/2008
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) yesterday priced its benchmark size dirham-denominated Islamic bond sale at the top of a previously indicated range, two bankers at arranging banks said.
The state-owned utility priced its Islamic bonds, or sukuk, at 125 basis points over the six-month Emirates Interbank Offered Rate (Eibor), said the bankers, who declined to be named. The benchmark interest rate is now at 1.99 per cent.

The GCC Interconnection Grid, which will link power grids of the six-member states, is progressing on schedule and the first phase is expected to come online during the first quarter of next year.

The UAE has officially joined the GCC power grid in its current phase, it was announced here today.
Yousef Ahmed Janahi, Director of Planning at the Qatari Water and Electricity Corporation said yesterday that the UAE has fulfilled its financial obligations as provided for in the relevant agreements. The draft of the multilateral power grid agreement is ready and will be sent to GCC secretariat, he said.

Abu Dhabi’s water conservation plans Posted on 19/05/2008
Abu Dhabi, which has the highest water consumption rate in the world, is planning to slash consumption and focus on conservation. Residents used an average of 550 litres of water a day compared with 85 litres in Jordan, a country with a similar climate, said Dr Mohammed Dawoud, manager of the water resources department at the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD). The figure rises with the inclusion of water for agriculture and forestry, which was 68 per cent of total consumption in 2006.

The Federal National Council (FNC) yesterday approved an amendment to allow the private sector to build power generation and water desalination plants for the first time in the UAE's history. The UAE and its neighbouring sultanate, Oman, have embarked on coal-powered plant projects to boost electricity capacity, aware that demand for gas would soon outstrip supply.
