Zayed energy prize jury in Capital to select winners

The Zayed Future Energy Prize's (ZFEP) international jury is in Abu Dhabi to select the 2014 winners, who will be announced on January 20 next year, during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

In the meantime, a total of 23 shortlisted submissions are evaluated across five categories: Large Corporation, Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Small and Medium Enterprise (SME), Lifetime Achievement and Global High School.

"There are many things we are looking for in selecting the winners, but at the core is how fundamentally they can demonstrate change is possible,” Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, President of Iceland and chairman of the jury, told Khaleej Times.

Change towards a cleaner, greener, more sustainable world that eventually combats climate change is the final aim of the SZFEP, which is managed by Masdar on behalf of the Abu Dhabi government since its inception in 2009.

High talk about fighting climate change has been going on for decades at government level worldwide, yet Grimsson admits "we are not yet on the course of slowing down climate change”.

"This year we've seen a series of wake-up calls, with extreme weather in New York, Europe, China, the Philippines with destruction at high scale. In my own country, and in Greenland too, there is more aggressive melting of the glaciers, which will result in the sea level rise. Now even countries like Singapore are preparing sea level rising,” said Grimsson. "That is why this Prize is so important. It is not just about the money, it is a message that it is possible to change the world and hopefully to reverse climate change,” he added.

The closed-door jury meeting in Abu Dhabi marks the end of a four-tier judging process that started with an initial assessment by international research and analysis firm Bloomberg New Energy Finance.

With the exception of Large Corporation category, the other ZFEP's winners will share a pool of US$4 million cash. – Khaleej Times
