A series of summer camps to teach children about the country's heritage have been launched by Watani. The events for youngsters aged from seven to 16 will continue until the end of the month. The first two were held in Dubai and Fujairah. "The camps aim to provide a useful and enjoyable outlet for the children while introducing them to the rich social and historic heritage of the country,” said Ahmed Obaid Al Mansoori, co-ordinator general of the Watani Programme.

"The various activities will train the kids to co-operate and work together as one team and enhance their awareness about their national identity by introducing them to the traditions, values, arts and sciences of the UAE,” he said.

"Watani designed these activities as a platform to achieve balanced social development through individuals' participation in educational and humanitarian initiatives.” The 40 boys at the Dubai camp visited the Old Age Home Centre in Sharjah, Al Bastakiya heritage area in Dubai and Zabeel Park, where they were treated to a programme about astronomy.

The 60 girls at the Fujairah camp visited the Children's Farm, Arabian Peninsula Garden and Sharjah Natural History Museum as well as an astronomy show. A number of youngsters from the emirate's Special Needs Centre also took part in the two camps.
