posted on 30/09/2008

Vienna - Samuel Bodman, US Energy Secretary yesterday the praised the UAE for donating US$10 million to support the activities of the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP), a project aimed at promoting commercial use of nuclear power and accelerating and enlarging peaceful nuclear uses.
The GNEP, according to Secretary Bodman, is the pathway toward making commercial nuclear power widely available on a global scale.
"GNEP's members are committed to the promotion of nuclear energy as a clean source of power in a way that reduces proliferation risks and nuclear waste burdens", he said in an address to the 52nd annual IAEA General Conference which opened in Vienna , Austria today.
"In that regard I am pleased to report that the United States will donate US$50 million toward the establishment of an International Nuclear Fuel Bank under IAEA auspices. And we welcome the US$10 million contribution by the United Arab Emirates ", he said. Attended by 145 Member States, the 5-day conference - from 29 September to 4 October, is discussing major issues facing the Agency. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
