Johannesburg - Women in the UAE have key role to play in the country's sustainable development and the coming fortnight will bring the launch of a strong mechanism to cement those ties, one of the leading female members of the UAE delegation o the UN Summit said. Miriam Al Hammadee, environmental awareness specialist at the nations Federal Environmental Agency, said sustainable development extended not only to natural resources by human and social concerns, land usage, education, urban environments and the economy, all areas that UAE women have been and continue to be involved in.

The UAE women is ready right now for women to stand up for preservation and conservation efforts, she said, citing the presence of several national women in the UAE delegation to Johannesburg World Summit as proof. Sustainability is not a new concept for the UAE and Arab or other women, Al Hammadee stressed. "We have sustainable traditions and slowly we are bringing them back,” she said, detailing the launch of an Environmental Committee in the federal General Women's Union next week.

Al Hammadee said the FEA and the Environmental Committee of the General Women's Union are embarking on a strategy to inject news of sustainable mechanisms and alternatives in every sphere of life in the emirates, from economy to technological and even leisure sectors. The General Women's Union, led by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the President's wife and its tradition crafts department offer a particularly good model for women around the UAE to get involved, she said. Membership in the committee will be open to women around the country. (The Gulf News)
