The UAE will take part in the International Health Conference on Continuous Development and the Environment to be held in South Africa from August 26 to September 4. Jasim Mohammed bin Darwish, Secretary General of the Secretariat of UAE Municipalities, said UAE leaders, since the formation of the federation, have recognised the importance of protecting the environment and developing its resources.

He said the UAE will submit a report at the conference covering all development aspects, initiatives and projects carried out in the country on health development and the environment. The report will include legislation to maintain the environment and limit pollution. It will state the role of each municipality in cleaning beaches, islands and creeks.

The report will mention efforts of each municipality in curbing off shore industrial establishments which have direct or indirect impact on the environment. He said the UAE has achieved success in this field because of the continuous cooperation and coordination between all parties including the Federal Environment Authority, Coast Guard and municipalities.

The UAE implements international and regional agreements regarding protection of the marine environment which all aimed at maintaining continuous development. Municipalities carry out afforestation and greenery projects and work to increase public awareness on environmental issues. All cities in the UAE are surrounded by a green belt to keep the air fresh and prevent desertification. Beaches have been turned into resorts that attract people from all over the world, he said. The UAE's efforts to maintain the environment and develop its resources are worth consideration by other countries, he added. (The Gulf News)
