UAE Foreign Ministry Under Secretary Saif Saeed bin Saed visited last Thursday the UAE Women Union's pavilion in the international exhibition being held at the Ubuntu village in Johannesburg on the sideline of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD). Bin Saed, who also leads the UAE delegation during the early stages preceding the summit of world heads of state and governments scheduled for Sept.2-4, was briefed by a representative of the General Women's Union on items on display in the pavilion such as environmental and heritage works and handicrafts especially prepared to demonstrate the great accomplishments achieved and the prosper life the UAE citizen is leading, thanks to the far-sighted leadership of President H.H Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan who believes that man is the real wealth and more precious than money or fortune.

The foreign Ministry Under Secretary praised the great endeavour the Women Union was exerting by virtue of the support of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Wife of the President and Chairperson of the Women Union, to encourage women to effectively contribute to the national development and conservation of the environment. He also lauded the keenness of the pavilion exhibitors to depict the true picture the UAE women occupy in their society. Bin Saed then toured sections of the Ministry of Information and Culture, the Federal Environment Agency, the Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency, Zayed International Prize for the Environment and UAE Municipalities inside the pavilion.

The UAE Head delegate said he was proud of what he had seen in the pavilion, particularly exhibits featuring environment conservation efforts by the government and the various development projects carried out over the past 30 years. There was a good turnout of public to the exhibition, with the UAE pavilion attracting more and more visitors every day from different nationalities, among them a sizeable portion of delegates attending the WSSD, who expressed their admiration over the exhibits. A visitor to the exhibition told WAM that the UAE pavilion had helped him change the stereotyped view he was holding about the UAE, which he said he would not have imagined that it was so green was it not for the exhibition.

Another visitor from South Africa said she was delighted to see the UAE woman represented in her country's delegation and that she was impressed when she started talking to them. "When I talked to them I found that they are of high cultural level and they speak English fluently, a sign of how progressed women in the UAE are," she added. A third visitor was so impressed by the handicraft and environmental works on display, believing that " it reflects the true picture of the UAE where heritage and modernity are juxtaposed." The Women Union's delegation to the WSSD is actively participating in meetings of various women panels emanating from the summit. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
