Tremors from a magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Pakistan were felt across the UAE early this morning.

The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology's senior earthquake engineer Khamis al Shamsi said the first aftershocks from the quake struck across the UAE about 12.23am. Smaller jolts were felt when an aftershock struck Pakistan shortly after 1.30am.

"We were very lucky to experience no damage after such a high magnitude and deep earthquake but it happened 900 to 1000 km away," said Mr al Shamsi.

"With a quake of such a high magnitude we may have expected some damage."

Mr al Shamsi said the Abu Dhabi-based centre made a report to police shortly after the earthquake occurred.

"Many people were scared and phoned the police to find out what was happening but we have received no reports of any damage."

He said the Gulf was surrounded by "a very active area", which included Iran. – The National
