Plans to award individuals and organisations for agricultural innovation are under discussion, WAM reported on Tuesday.

If approved, the proposed Sheikh Zayed Award for Agricultural Innovation will recognise individuals, corporations and government and non-government organisations that developed advanced innovations and technology contributing to sustainable agriculture.

Sheikh Zayed Award was discussed by the Board of Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) during a recent meeting.

The ADFCA hopes the award will help the world find creative solutions to future demand for food.

Meanwhile, ADFCA has approved a project for building world-class veterinary clinics and laboratories to cater to the emirate's growing animal population.

The project will feature construction of Al Wathba veterinary clinic and laboratory at international standards, WAM reported.

Veterinary clinics at Qatara and Madinat Zayed will also be rebuilt.

The board, in its the third regular meeting of the year under the chairmanship of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Presidential Affairs, commissioned the competent body to hire an international consultant to design the project in line with guidelines of international organisations.

The board discussed the mechanism for prompt endorsement of technical regulations and specifications regarding food commodities.

The ADFCA will coordinate with Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology to approve such rules after incorporating latest regulations introduced by the Codex Alimentarius, the international food standards, guidelines and codes of practice established by the Food and Agricultural Organisation and World Health Organisation
