Region’s largest solar hot water system to be set up in Abu Dhabi
posted on 21/01/2009

Millennium Energy Industries (MEI), a leading solar solutions company operating in the MENA region, will set up a huge central solar hot water system at the Modern Residential City, coming up at the Al Musafah area in Abu Dhabi.
Described as the largest unit of its kind in the UAE and in the region, the solar system is expected to be capable of supplying 1.3 million litres/day of hot water for domestic use for the 25,000-odd residents who will be staying in the 48 buildings to be located in the city.
According to the officials of the Jordan-based company who are attending the World Future Energy Summit (WFES), the advanced solar solution will generate savings of more than US$3 million in capital costs, equivalent to over 35 per cent of the cost of the planned conventional centralised electrical system. This includes the utility connection fees for 8 MW of power load savings. The new solar solution, which also includes an electrical backup system, will enable over 90 per cent savings in the running cost during the winter months.
"With the right regional engineering expertise, advanced solar heating technology is currently commercially viable due to its efficiency and reliability,” said Ennis Rimawi, chairman of MEI.
"The solution MEI will install in Modern Residential City has great potential for significant cost savings over the conventional system and with all the benefits of being green. This will in fact, complement Abu Dhabi's existing environmental initiatives such as Masdar. – Khaleej Times
