Cutting or selling of the wood of the national tree of UAE — Ghaf — will cost the violators a fine of Dhs50,000 as bodies from various government and non-governmental organisations are making efforts to increase its number all over the country.

This was told by Tatiana Antonelli Abella, managing director of Goumbook.com, while addressing a press conference held in Al Barari, Dubai on Saturday.

The event, ‘Give a Ghaf' campaign, was organised by Canon Middle East as part of its environmental conservation efforts in the UAE in which the firm donated the resources to plant around 3,000 Ghaf trees in different areas.

On the importance of the initiative, she said that Ghaf tree planting programme was initiated by the Social Enterprise Goumbook to raise public awareness about the UAE national tree and its values.

"Trees are fundamental components in the ecosystem that provide us with health, food, air, water, fertile soils and a stable climate. This particular tree is full of benefits as it provides shade; the leaves act as food for animals; trunk can be used for fire and roots could be used in different medicines,” she said

Anurag Agrawal, managing director, Canon Middle East, while shedding light on the ‘Give a Ghaf' initiative said, "The initiative was launched early this year as part of Canon Middle East's long-term sustainability programme highlighting the company's commitment to be a socially responsible and environmentally conscious business organisation.

"The company fulfilled its pledge to plant a Ghaf tree for every energy-efficient inkjet printer, laser printer, toner cartridge, photo lens and calculator product it sold at showrooms in the UAE during the first quarter of this year,” he added.

To fulfil the pledge, around 100 employees and family members of the firm, along with volunteers, gathered to plant 2,939 Ghaf trees in Al Barari Nursery. – The Gulf Today
