Johannesburg - Intensive ministerial meetings held at the on-going UN World Summit on Sustainable Development, have yielded positive developments in a number of issues on the Summit's agenda, Sources close to the Summit said. The Sources told the Emirates News Agency, WAM, that there had been a significant breakthrough on issues related to the environment, natural resources and issues of general interest but issues like the funding of development programmes, globalisation and trade are still under hot debate and discussions.

The conference had deliberated on energy, discussing a proposal by Brazil on ways to find renewable energy to face the increasing energy demand of the world family, whose population is expected to reach eight billion by 2015. The conference also discussed a proposal by the Group of 77, which is made up of 133 countries. Presented by Iran, the Group's coordinator, the proposal, which is to serve as a mid-solution, calls for every geographic region to find its own renewable energy according to its need.

The Sources said that most OPEC members, especially, Iran, Algeria, Mexico and Venezuela, have agreed with the proposal, while Saudi Arabia opposed the time frame set for the obtaining of renewable energy. The conference continues it sitting today with various groups trying to patch up differences on points of disagreement on various issues. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
