Faces from the past stare out from a time younger generations can only imagine, in a new exhibition in Dubai. Up to 100 black and white photographs capture the past to the present day in the UAE Ancient Roots and Present Photographs Exhibition now open at the Juma Al Majid Centre for Culture and Heritage in Deira.
The collection was unveiled by the centre's founder Juma Al Majid and visiting Patriarch Ignatius the Fourth Hazim, Patriarch of Greek Orthodox in Antioch and All East. It features snapshots of significant men who played an important part in the history of the emirates as well as private letters between them, regarding a raft of subjects including the economy, banking and education.
Images in the far gallery depict social life, education, maritime life, forts and architecture in the UAE. Also documented through photographs are the establishment of the Federation and progress in foreign affairs and trade.
Visitors can view the family trees of the ruling families and look at historic maps charting changes over the years. Among the multitude of rare photographs is one of a pearl merchant who opened the first school in Dubai in 1912. Another shows how boats were still built "by eye" in the 1950s. And descriptions in Arabic and English offer glimpses into each moment caught on camera. Members of the public are welcome to view the new exhibition which is a permanent display at the centre.
