Johannesburg - A panel of experts from the Zayed International Prize for Environment is conducting a flurry of activity on the sideline of the World Summit for Sustainable Development (WSSD) to familiarise the world delegates about the objectives of this unique UAE award. The panel has already conferred with virtually also heads of delegates of regional groupings and international bodies, said Dr. Mohammed Ahmed bin Fahad, Chairman of the 22-member High Committee for the prize.

The committee comprises experts on environmental issues from around the world. He said the panel also held meetings with representatives of 68 organisations and firms involved in environmental issues in addition to UN-affiliated environmental agencies. "We have briefed them on the objectives of the prize, the areas of interest and conferences and workshops which are regularly conducted by the prize committee” said Fahad, adding that the prize, the biggest ever in the field of environment, has received wide acclaim from the various international delegates.

As part of its promotional activity, the panel launched a massive awareness campaign which involved about 100 satellite television channels worldwide. Another activity undertaken by the panel was the promotion of Dubai Declaration on Integrated Water Management, which has been adopted as a UN document. The Zayed Prize for Environment was launched in February 1998, as a tribute to the role of President H.H Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in a striking a balance between the country's needs for sustainable development and environmental protection. It was also a token of recognition for Sheikh Zayed's efforts to support international endeavours to protect the global environment.

The one million dollar prize is split into three prizes, the first prize being USUS$500,000 while the second and third prizes are USUS$300,000 and 200,000 respectively. The prize is open to non-governmental organisations, firms, academic institutions and individuals who have achieved outstanding contributions in any areas of environment. These include eco-systems management, water management, bio-diversity conservation, wildlife management, environmental awareness, rural development and many other areas.
