The number of national fishermen is steadily rising in the UAE and the amount of local fishing boats have recorded a remarkable increase over the last three decades.

The country strictly follows the law, which prevents foreign fishing vessels from fishing in its territorial waters.

The latest figures released by the Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW) showed that the number of fishing boats in the UAE rose from 1065 in the year 1976 to a staggering 5692 boats in 2009.

Currently there over 6296 Emirati fishermen from across the seven emirates and are actively engaged in the traditional trade, showed the report.

The Ministry is working on the development of the fisheries sector in the country through a variety of measures such as legislative, technical as well as the development of fishermen's community considering the fact that the fisheries constitutes a major part in ensuring food security. The ministry is also working in close cooperation with several institutions to find solutions to help the fishermen and ensure their continuity in the profession. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
