Nominations invited for the Zayed International Environmental Award

Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs), firms, research centres and individuals with outstanding achievements in the field of the environment are invited to submit their nominations for the Zayed International Environmental Award, it was announced here today. Speaking at a press conference, Dr. Mohammed Ahmed bin Fahad, said organisations and other specialised bodies involved in environmental work could submit their candidacy for the award, provided that they meet the basic requirements for the competition.



He said the award would not be restricted to just cash prizes, certificates and mementos that are distributed to winners every two years, but has broaden to encompass other areas. He noted that the award is organised under the auspices of an ambitious institution that undertakes research studies and field surveys in the field of environment, in addition to organising workshops and regional and international conferences to discuss environmental issues.



Fahad said that the field of environment had broadened to include new areas such as eco-systems management, conservation of bio-diversity, wildlife conservation, sustainable development, environmental awareness and introduction of friendly-friendly technologies. "Any significant achievement made by firms, organisations or individuals in any of the fields can qualify them for the award” said Fahad. He said the US$1 million award was initially aimed at encouraging and rewarding major contribution in the field of environment. He pointed out that the award is divided into three categories of prize, the first prize being US$500,000 while the second prize is US$ 300,000.



The third prize is US$ 200,000. Institutions cannot make more than one nomination. On the history of the award which is held under the patronage of Gen. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Minister of Defence, Dr. Fahad said that it came into being as a tribute to a man who has made unparallel achievements in the field of friendly- H.H. President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

"The award is therefore designed to encourage institutions and individuals around the world to emulate Sheikh Zayed's model and help make our world a better place” remarked Dr. Fahad. The press conference was attended by Saif bin Sa'ed, Under Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and head of the UAE delegation to the meetings of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD.
