The United Arab Space Agency on Wednesday said it is ready to support international efforts to promote the use of space technology for joint environmental monitoring and research projects, and will facilitate access of concerned international organisations to data acquired by national space assets like DubaiSat satellites, operated by the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre.

Director-General of the agency, Dr Mohammed Al Ahbabi, told the three-day Eye of Earth Summit 2015, which began on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi, that space technology is "our eyes on Earth and enables us to help improve human life and further support citizens and expatriates in the United Arab Emirates."

He said the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and satellite communications are indispensable tools for environmental monitoring and management and help pave the way for a sustainable, safe and ecologically balanced environment.

He praised the summit as an important platform for promoting international action to revolutionise ways of collecting, accessing, sharing and using data for changing the world. These, he noted, are prioritised in the agency's strategies.

"The UAE Space Agency strongly believes in the value of a sustainable healthy environment and we will endeavour, as part of our mandate, to promote earth monitoring and tracking, not only for the benefit of the United Arab Emirates, but also for the benefit of all mankind and for all future generations by safeguarding the health of our precious plant," Al Ahbabi added.

Following the success of the 2011 inaugural Summit, Eye on Earth 2015 is seeking to promote dialogue and drive international action that revolutionises the way we collect, access, share and use data and information for real-world change. The 2015 summit seeks to foster a culture of collaboration through a network committed to achieving scalable impact for a sustainable future.

In December 2011, the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi through the Abu Dhabi Global Environmental Data Initiative (AGEDI) in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), convened global leaders, innovators and decision-makers in the inaugural Eye on Earth Summit. – Emirates News Agency, WAM -http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395286461742.html
