The Illegal Trade in Elephant Ivory campaign, launched by the Ministry of Environment and Water, from 2nd to 13th August, at the Abu Dhabi International Airport in co-operation with the Abu Dhabi Customs, the Abu Dhabi Airports Corporation and the International Fund For Animal Welfare (IFAW), has received significant response from the public.

Aisha Al Abdouli, Director of Awareness and Education Department at the Ministry, said the campaign aims to educate travellers about the legal requirements on ivory trade, adding that the move comes within the framework of the national strategy to raise awareness and environmental education.

The campaign coincides with the increasing number of seizures and confiscation of live animals, plants, ivory, leather products, sandalwood and others. It also aims to ensure the state's bio-security and protection from diseases and pests, as well as commitment and fulfilment of international agreements.

Throughout the campaign, samples of ivory that were confiscated previously are displayed to educate travellers about the importance of wildlife and the risks elephants are facing. In addition, educational leaflets prepared by the ministry in co-operation with the IFAW are being distributed to travellers. – Emirates News Agency, WAM - http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395284090660.html
