Greater awareness on UAE desert urged

Dr Mohammed Ali Reza Khan, the award-winning nature conservationist at the Dubai Municipality, has called for greater awareness about the flora and fauna of the UAE desert.

Speaking at a presentation on UAE natural history to the students of the University of Wollongong Dubai (UOWD), Dr Khan said: "Not many people know that the desert is full of life. It comes alive especially at night, teeming with insects, birds, lizards and beetles. There is a need for increased awareness about the wonders of the desert.” Dr Khan, a wildlife and zoo management specialist at the municipality, also spoke about the wonders of the desert when it rains. He singled out the Ghaf tree as the symbol of desert flora, which grows on fresh water and whose roots go 30 metres deep.

The students of UOWD conducted exploration of UAE's deserts in June, under the guidance of Dr Khan, covering the areas near Jebel Ali Truck Road, Bab Al Shams, Sai Al Salam and Fujairah Wadi Wuraya Park. Zeenath Reza Khan, Instructor, Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering, UOWD, monitored the students during the trip. – Khaleej Times
