Manila - UAE Minister of Labour H.E. Saqr Ghobash and Director General of the International Organisation for Migration William Lacy Swing held meetings here to discuss cooperation for the welfare of migrant workers. Both officials are in Manila to participate in the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD).
Headquartered in Geneva IOM possesses full juridical personality and currently has 125 Member States.
Ghobash and Swing discussed cooperation between UAE Labour Ministry and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), and explored ways for utilising the expertise of both sides in regulating the labour market. The IOM programmes for empowering migrant workers and protecting their rights also featured the discussions.
Ghobash reviewed with the IOM Chief, UAE's pilot project to survey and document best practices in the management of the temporary contractual employment cycle. The UAE initiative was announced yesterday in Manila during the events of the Global Forum on Migration and Development.
Swing welcomed the initiative saying that UAE became the first in the Arab region to herald such a project aimed at improving the life and working conditions of migrant labours.
The project, designed in consultation with India and Philippines, seeks to improve the quality of recruitment, induction and other pre-deployment processes, and then to provide the workers with decent working and living conditions during their temporary contractual employment and residency in the host country.
Three thousand workers from India and Philippines will participate in this pilot project, which will present a model for the future measures to improve the living conditions of all the contractual workers.
Swing hailed the prudent leadership of UAE for creating job opportunities for migrant workers and providing them decent living conditions while working in the country.
Ghobash also met senior officials from the French Ministry of Immigration and National Identity, and discussed with them cooperation between UAE and France in matters of labour migration and welfare. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
