Three wind farms with the capacity to generate 66 mega Watts of electricity can be built in Fujairah, according to a feasibility study conducted by the Ministry of Energy in co-ordination with the Fujairah Government.
Presenting the findings of the study in Abu Dhabi yesterday at the forum on "Sustainable Development”, organised by the French Business Group and the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Energy Minister Mohamed bin Dhaén said the UAE is keeping a "close watch” on technological development in renewable sources such as solar and wind energy.
This is "despite possessing ample hydrocarbon and natural gas resources”, he added "We have recently developed generators powered by wind in Abu Dhabi with a capacity of 850kW,” Dhaén added.
The UAE's domestic power consumption has undergone "extensive expansion” in the past five years, Dhaén said. "Our electricity generating capacity has gone up from 9,200mW in 2000 to 16,500mW in 2005. We have plans to meet the requirements of 2025 and beyond, requiring capital investments of billions of dollars,” he said. (The Emirates Today)
