The national strategy for the advancement of UAE women was distributed in Johannesburg last Thursday as the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) enters its fourth day. The strategy, recently issued by the UAE General Women's Union and distributed by its representatives in the UAE delegation to the WSSD, deals with women's rights as stipulated by the constitution and ways of consolidating family ties, supporting women's contribution in economic and educational domains and stressing their social identity, with particular emphasis on the Arab and Islamic values.

In the foreword, H.H Sheikha Fatima affirms that the strategy resembles a new, more ambitious stage in women's activities that copes with the third millennium exigencies, by virtue of the directives of President H.H Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the patron of the UAE women march. " This strategy aims at activating the role of women and ensuring their positive participation in eight key areas: Education, economy, media, social work, health, legislations and environment as well as political and executive fields," H.H Sheikha Fatima says.

Obstacles that impede women's participation in all domains of public life, she adds, need to be removed to help women contribute to the sustainable development. Sheikha Fatima has expressed the hope that the UAE society and its institutions would support the strategy and contribute actively to implement the plans and objectives set out therein. "The issuance of such national strategies stands as a proof that the UAE women are committed to the recommendations of the International Woman Conference held in Beijing in 1995, which was a turning point towards giving women more attention, equity and social justice, "she notes.
