A mild earthquake hit the Eastern Hatta on Friday, generating tremors that were felt in the northern emirates.

The tremor was not capable of causing any damage and went largely unnoticed by people living in the area.

The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) said it occurred at 4:31pm and was measuring 2.9 on the Richter scale.

The epicentre of the earthquake was some 29km in the south of Fujairah in the vicinity of Eastern Hatta, an area known for rugged mountains. The depth of the quake was 5.2km in the earth. It was though very close to the surface but was not strong enough to cause any damage. This was the second earthquake that hit the country in this month. On June 4, a minor quake frightened the people in Dibba Al Hosn in Fujairah. It measured 2 on the Richter scale.

The UAE, which is located close to one of the world major earthquake zone in Iran, has some fault zones in the northern emirates with a recent history of tremors since 1999. – Gulf News
