Representatives from the Emirates Environment Group (EEG) are among those who will represent UAE at the upcoming World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), said Habiba Al Marashi, the group's chairperson and representative at the summit. The conference will be held in Johannesburg from August 26 to September 4. According to the "Khaleej Times”, which reported the story in its issue of today, the only ISO certified non-governmental organisation (NGO) of its kind in the Middle East, EEG has been invited to participate in the United Nations conference as a member of the UAE delegation. "It is a great honour that we have been invited to attend the WSSD," said Al Marashi. She said that NGOs were not necessarily interested in raising issues through dissent, and EEG has, over the years, substantiated this fact by supporting various schemes and projects implemented by government authorities for the preservation of environment.

Earlier, a special environment committee consisting of prominent women environmentalists has been formed under the directive of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Wife of the President and Chairperson of the UAE Women's Federation, to represent the UAE at the conference. Noura Al Suweidi, Director of the Federation, said that the ad-hoc committee would coordinate with various local environmental bodies to ensure that the summit's recommendations are followed up and relationship between women and environment is boosted.

The director of the Women's Federation said that the President's wife was keen to see women play an active role in the development of the environment which had recorded steady progress that made it a model at both regional and international levels. She hailed the outcome of the first Arab media regional forum on environment and sustainable development held here last month under the auspices of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Deputy Chairman of the Environmental Research and Wildlife Development Agency.
