Johannesburg - The United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP, in conjunction with the Council of Arab Ministers in Charge of Environment, have floated an initiative on the administration of waste, which they will present to the UN World Summit on Sustainable Development, currently underway here in Johannesburg. The initiative, which is the result of a collective work by a number of Arab organisations, including the Bahrain Children and Mothers Welfare Society, the Kuwait Environment Protection Society, the Gulf Network for Environmental NGOs and the Ajiah Youth Group, seeks to set up and support society dependant projects on the proper administration of wastes, just as it seeks to provide the necessary expertise and support in the field of projects administration and technology transfer, creation of awareness, exchange of information and the collection of donations and charity.

The initiative is also aimed at enhancing the role of NGOs, being a integral partner in the sustainable development drive, and at changing consumption style, encouraging the administration of solid wastes, as well as encouraging regional works among women and youths in order to achieve sustainable development. The partners in this initiative stipulated their work plan for drawing a regional strategy to allow contributions from the civil society institutions so as to reflect the objectives of the initiative, and to set a regional plan for its implementation in stages and according to a timetable set for every stage, with the first phase commencing in 2004.

The partners also agreed to set up a joint secretariat to run the projects. Members of the secretariat would be drawn from the partners, who are signatories to the initiative. In addition, an follow up committee, which will consist of major partners of the initiative, would be set up to supervise the implementation and improvement of the initiative. A special fund would also be set up to finance the imitative, which shall also have financial support from some regional financial institutions like the Arab Social and Economic Development Fund, in addition to membership dues and donations.
