CAIRO: Dr. Amal Abdullah Al Qubaisi, Speaker of Federal National Council, FNC, met with Olav Fykse Tveit, General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, during her participation in Al Azhar International Peace Conference in Cairo on Friday.

Tveit praised the UAE's enlightened approach and open mind regarding the world, and the presence of more than 200 nationalities living on its land, describing the UAE as a model of co-existence, tolerance and openness to others.

He added that Dr. Al Qubaisi's speech during the opening session of the conference clarified many concepts and sent many positive messages with great impact, which needed to be transformed into real practices.

Dr. Al Qubaisi stressed the importance of the conference and its role in the current era, which is witnessing many tensions at various levels. She also expressed her happiness at the participants' contributions during the conference, which emphasised that Islam is separate from violence and extremism. She also described the conference as a good beginning and a new stance for fighting terrorism and extremism.

She added that the UAE supports a number of international initiatives and pioneering international organisations that enhance the values of tolerance, denounce violence and combat extremism, including the International Centre of Excellence for Countering Violent Extremism, Hedayah, the Sawab Centre, the Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies and the Muslim Council of Elders, MCE, based on its unshakeable belief in the coexistence of religions, civilisations and cultures.

"We are keen on building strong relations with parliamentary institutions, the voice of people, and various religious scholars around the world, especially Muslims, and particularly Sheikh Al-Azhar who represents a great value for us as he is among the most prominent religious leaders in the Islamic world, Egypt and the entire Islamic nation," Olav Fykse Tveit said.
