 UAE prepared to defend itself against security threats

A contract for building the Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed specialised medical complex in Casablanca, Morocco, was signed Wednesday between Abu Dhabi Municipality and French Jacob France Engineering Consultancy Group. The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) yesterday announced the retrospective prices for June 2008 for Abu Dhabi's four main grades of crude oil. The UAE has the lowest subsidies on fuel prices among oil producers and experts believe this has contributed to accelerating inflation in the country. Details published in London this week based on 2006 figures showed the UAE did not have any subsidy on diesel prices, while it provided a subsidy of US$10 per barrel of gasoline.  Nakheel breaks ground on W Bangkok

Nakheel Hotels broke ground this week on its W Bangkok hotel development, the firm's latest project in Southeast Asia. The 400-room property, to be managed by Starwood Hotels & Resorts, is expected to open at the end of 2010, the company said in a statement yesterday.  UAE national filmmaker takes second place at Rotterdam film festival

The Emirates Foundation announced Wednesday that Bint Mariam won second place in the short film category at the Arab Film Festival held June 18-22 in Rotterdam. The film previously won second prize at the Gulf Film Festival in Dubai in April.

Dubai will host another first-of-its-kind film festival in the region called "Documentary Voices: Pulling Focus" – a film festival focusing exclusively on documentaries. It will open on Saturday.
