The UAE, it is safe to say, has never had green fingers when it comes to homegrown crops.
With freshwater supplies scarce and available farmland scarcer, the Emirates has faced a constant battle to feed its soaring population.

In a major land acquisition move, the Al Qudra Holding is trying to acquire over 400,000 hectares of agricultural land in the first quarter of next year. The move made through its agricultural arm, Al Qudra Agriculture, signals the company's strategy to heavily invest on a global level in the agricultural produces. The UAE will continue to tap expertise and experiences of international organisations and adopt international best practices in agricultural research to upgrade and modernise its farming sector, according to H.E. Dr. Rashid Ahmed bin Fahad, Minister of Environment and Water.

The United Arab Emirates and Ireland stressed the need for boosting two-way cooperation as well as exchanging expertise, in the field of organic agriculture in particular. A number of agricultural and aesthetic projects were launched by Dubai Municipality on Wednesday. Trees will be planted in the Umm Al Shief street, Al Thaniya and Al Quoz garden lake as part of Dubai Municipality Afforestation Week on March 28. Abu Dhabi organic farm wins global recognition Posted on 21/02/2008
The first internationally recognised organic farm has been certified in Abu Dhabi by the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements. Spread over five hectares, the Abu Dhabi Organic Farm has been a work in progress for about two years and finally received full certification in December 2007. Organic produce grown on the farm will include tomatoes, mushrooms, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers and herbs as well as strawberries, mango and honey.

Abu Dhabi has 100,000 water wells Posted on 28/02/2007
It is estimated that about 100,000 water wells exist in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. However, these wells had been drilled in the absence of regulatory control, were unregistered and data about them was lacking.
The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) has now commissioned GTZ/Dornier Consortium to register more than 10,000 wells, located in Al Ain and Liwa. This comes in line with one of EAD's main responsibilities to manage the Emirate's groundwater resources.

The UAE wants to import 600,000 tonnes of dried alfalfa and has sent a delegation to Spain to discuss terms of a tender, industry sources said yesterday. Alfalfa is high in protein and fibre and is used as fodder for goats, sheep and dairy cows in Spain and also for camels in the country. Researchers in the Western Region of Abu Dhabi have managed to give a new lease of life to a collection of wild plants which almost became extinct by million years of desertification and erosion spells.
