Cairo - United Arab Emirates yesterday signed the statute of the Arab Centre for prevention of earthquake calamities and other natural disasters. UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) and Afghani Red Crescent Society (RCS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up a psychiatric hospital at cost over AED2.9 million to heal the Afghani people traumatised by the incessant wars.

In an aggressive drive to protect the declining population of Asiatic houbara, Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi has released the 2nd flock of UAE captive-bred houbara in the Pakistani wild.
The flock included 25 Asiatic houbara, which were captive-bred in the National Avian Research Centre "NARC".

 Al Gharbia: New name for Western Region

UAE's nominal GDP to surge 24.5pc in 2008

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) yesterday said inflation in the UAE, estimated at 11 per cent in 2007, is set to drop to nine per cent in 2008, but cautioned that dirham's de-pegging from the dollar or revaluation could have little impact in controlling escalating prices.

UAE-Japan trade up 45% to US$13.91b

Trade between the UAE and Japan registered outstanding growth over the first quarter of the current year with the overall value of trade between both countries growing by nearly 45 per cent to US$13.91 billion (Dhs51.1 billion) over the first three months of this year compared to US$9.59 billion (Dhs35.2 billion) over the corresponding period last year.

 Metro’s first concrete run expected this week

The first concrete test run of the Dubai Metro will be done in the current week, according to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) yesterday. Sources said that the RTA was at present conducting day to day tests of different kinds.
The official added that the first concrete testing would be done anytime this week at a 4-km test track built in between the Ibn Battuta Station and the Jebel Ali Industrial Area station. Earlier, the RTA had said that the test run would be done on May 15.

Burj Dubai, the world's tallest tower being developed by Emaar Properties, has recorded another global first with the installation of glass panels at a height of 512 metres (1,679.76ft).
